Sylvester, founded in 1898, has been the county seat of Worth County since 1904. It originated as "Isabella Station", a depot on the Brunswick and Albany Railroad. In 1882, a post office was located at the depot and the name "Sylvester" was given to the postal facility. As people came to the area, they began to settle around the depot and the commerce brought in by the railroad.
Sylvester is known nationally for its annual Peanut Festival held every October since 1963. Sylvester is known as the "Peanut Capital of the World". The whole city joins in the celebration with street dances, junior parades for children, a beauty pageant, arts and crafts, and a large parade that attracts thousands of people.
The Sylvester-Worth County Chamber of Commerce is located in downtown Sylvester and provides a wealth of additional information on Sylvester and Worth County.
